    After trying to get a foothold in new galaxies, a strong demand for a small, agile, but battle-worthy ship soon rose, as the newly formed mining fleets required armed escorts that could handle the occasional pirate incursions and protect the sensitive - and high value - cargo, as well as smoke out pirate stations in larger numbers.

    The result was the D4GR-A Dagger assault corvette, the first ship of a new class, offering moderate shielding, but high mobility and considerable firepower for its size. The whole vessel was designed around providing maximum firepower for its size at all ranges, and still be quick enough to either kill or outmaneuver and outrun most possible opponents.
    In combat the Dagger usually approaches undetected using a jammer, then opens fire from afar using its high explosive lock-on long range missiles, then moves closer to bring its autocannon array and overdrive machine gun turrets to bear. To stop an escaping target, twin Graviton stop machine guns and a jump inhibitor (just large enough to make chain drives useless) help keep a target in place, or at least reduce its speed until the rest of the corvette's weaponry rip through its armor and guts the systems. 128 thousand, Ion reinforced shield capacity, 6 anti-missile turrets and standard armor protect it from return fire while in combat.

    Shortly after the Dagger's introduction, a second variant was commissioned as a system authority vessel, this time specialised for interception. The jump inhibitor was scaled up, and a 25% Overdrive system was added, as a trade-off for 28000 less shielding. The overdrive turrets were replaced with heavy Graviton machine gun turrets, and thrusters recalibrated for better forward thrust. The main gun's fire rate was scaled up at the cost of less damage per shot, but the graviton machine guns and missile launchers were unchanged, still offering considerable firepower to take down a target that refuses to heed the warning and offers resistance. This variant is distinguished by a different paint job as well.

    Both ships have USD type 1 compatible airlocks, and can house 6 crew members, although the accomodations are quite spartan. For a ship this size, that mostly operates close to friendly stations or carriers, no dedicated medical facility or mess hall was deemed necessary, and the cargo capacity is very limited as well. Then again, as a senior Admiral pointed out "This is a warship, for crying out loud, not a luxury yacht. Wanna serve on a Myrmidon instead, on a week-long patrol hot bunking near the drive core on hammocks smelling like industrial lubricant and male sweat?"
