Title says it all, where do you like to begin when you just start? Also, any recommendations on a multiplayer server?

Salvage stuff, make a factory, put factory on a derelict station. Salvage more, stockpile power and salvage modules, make a bigger salvager.

Move up to salvaging one planet, then work from there to make a new base

didnt you know? scrap produces energy at a rate of about half a normal station

no realy scrap devices function exactly like normal ones exept when salvaged they produce scrap not the block

So essentially, with enough credits, I could just take over the station?

Except that a sun cannot deal damage in the entire shadow of your base.

True, but you can have long-ranged turrets on the shadowed side, whilst the sun protects the other one. But I guess LRTs are not considered part of beginning... xP
