What is the max size for a ship?

What is the max size a ship could be (mass, length, width, height) without causing server issues? I've heard that some people create ships that cause massive problems with collision detection and wanted to avoid that while creating a large ship. My estimate is around 3 millon blocks for the ship. Is that too many?

Anyone care to comment on issues with larger ships? I\'ve heard of people with gigantic ones crashing into planets and causing servers to crash / freeze, so I\'d like to avoid any problems.
