What is hyperdrive?

Hey, I'm really confused about how hyperdrive works. I've asked several times and no one has answered me. Thanks

It's not specifically made for galaxy travel. The galaxies might be large enough to warrant multiple hyperspace jumps. It's current limit was stated as jump gate range.

Also, OP, you could have just searched for it. There are multiple posts about it since it was in the news post a few weeks ago.

I've tried, I'm still confused. Is it a buffed jump drive? How does it work? I've heard everything from it transporting you to an alternate dimensional sector to it jumping a very long distance instantly, just like the jump drive.

It is intended for capital ships. Its supposed to be a driveable version of the jump drive where you will be able to travel through sectors and steer. Since it isn't even in a dev build yet, that's all unconfirmed stuff.

As far as I can tell..

Imagine if there was a 3D map of the universe; where stars (and planets?) are small dots/spheres. When you activate your hyperdrive, your ship is moved into this 3D map. You get 2 seconds to point in the direction you want; and then your ship races forwards. Where it ends up in the 3D map is where your ship gets teleported to.

Of course the graphics for the "3D map" are probably going to look fancy (e.g. look more like you're speeding through a miniaturised version of space) and have special effects applied. I'd also expect various restrictions; like not being about to exit your ship while its in hyper-space, a time limit so you can't stay in hyper-space for very long, etc.

I like the idea of steering jump drive, as long as it isnt instant. But ah well. Thanks guys
