What Can Crew Members Do?

I've been wanting crew for a while, and finally got some. However I'm curious what all they can really do? When my ship starts to move, crew members attached to the ship generally like to slide and no-clip outside of the ship. This is a big problem, but what else CAN crew members do exactly?

They are useless.

they can shoot enemy astronauts, thats about it.

They're a work-in-progress, like the entire rest of the game.

Still, they're in the game in the first place, so I suppose it couldn't hurt for us to start building rooms, bunks, barracks, etc. for them in most of our ships...

Well, they can defend factories, I've seen that at a big station on a server I played on. I would not suggest putting them on anything other than stations

Technically, by using the Go To command, they can (er, sometimes can) become "aligned" to ships and won't just slide through your ship when it moves, but they don't really DO anything besides shoot enemy astronauts and NPCs, so yeah, for now they're useless.
