What am i doing wrong

Yesterday I decided to make my first big ship that was atleast 50x15x10 and contained over 250 shield modules. So later found 7 pirates (in the defualt ship) and decided to engage them. My shields never went down once and when I went into build mode to see the damage atleast half my ship was gone and wasnt repairable. So I tore it down and made a new one, im just wondering why that happened if my shield didnt go under half. I just thought shields were supposed to protect you but it was just the same if i didnt have any shields. Is that supposed to happen.

if pirates are not in the same sector as you they ignore shields

i downloaded some ships how do i add them to the game??

They don\'t ignore shields, you just don\'t get the shield health update correctly so your shields are dropping without you knowing
