Just some simple thoughts....
1: If i were to drive a massive metal ship head first into a desert, the ship should sink some. That sand should move out of the way. Dirt to a lesser extent. Either the sand is deleted or it should move out of the way. Maybe this mechanic could even be developed on with water or even lava.
2: Erosion. The dirt/sand on the outside of the ship should be removed when flying at high speeds. Why? Because sometimes people are cheap and will make a ship out of terrain rather than metal. Metal's only advantage over dirt is it's 25% armour... which is very feeble when you consider it's price in comparison.
