Warpgates would allow instantaneous travel between entire systems with limited availability. They could either be constructed, or discovered and excavated. These warpgates could be one way or have a certain radius in which they can go to other warpgates.

Then theres the master warpgate idea. An enormous warpgate that you have to discover in each system (somewhere near the center). Possibly could be an enourmous asteroid which once mined into and uncovered, could be activated. People then construct faction specific warpgates that are connected to the centeral warpgate. Only the faction that built it can use it, but they can be destroyed or captured allowing another faction to use it. Warpgates built could have a radius and every sector within that radius cannot have another warpgate built.

Now back to the master warpgate. Each warpgate is connected to the master warpgate. When a constructed warpgate is entered/used a menu or something pops up telling them to select a system within a certain radius(possibly adjacent). I dont know all the details. Just throwing ideas around. Constructed warpgates fire a beam that is the ship at the master warpgate. The master warpgate recieves the ship and sends it to its destination. Expand this idea please.

There are half a dozen ways to do FTL travel. Gates would make a nice component of space stations. The owners could link them up and create connections across the galaxy as the community grows. It is not something a ship would use.

A ship would need a warpgate/stargate/wormhole if it were not able for some reason to mount a warp drive.

It would make having a faction worthy of supporting such a structure more valuable, seeing as you wouldn\'t have to divert resources to making a warp drive for every single ship and could simply build a sufficiently large warp gate to make travel between two points in space possible.

I always preferred warp gates that were two ended though, having to have a gate at each destination end, and being linked together.

How would a gateway gate itself? You\'re running some sick non euclidian madness to pull that off.

It doesn\'t really matter what the heck it\'s called. A station can mount a device that allows ships to FTL, or ships can mount their own device to FTL. Either way it\'s a device that moves ships faster than 50m/s in a non-server-crashing way. The former encourages widespread player built infrastructure, while the latter becomes a basic component of every ship that doesn\'t suck. It\'s a simple matter of picking which ever one feels best.

If stations can warp themselves... well. That\'d be a bit awkward.
