IMO, the best change to jump drives would be having the sheer number of blocks you have define range, with the mass ratio defining speed and recharge time. This way small fighters would have short range jumps and rely on having a carrier to take them around. Sliders I feel would allow a big ship to be able to jump away far too fast if it wanted to.

Or you could do something like thrusters settings and have a slider to determine recharge rate versus jump range. The more modules would increase this ratio. If you want a really fast recharge you lose some of your range you could of gone.

You could balance your modules toward Recharge Speed, or Jump Distance. Big ships could focus on distance for long hauls, and small ones could focus on recharge for raiding or hit and run.
No mention of a slider. Thus not the literal same thing. Either way I like your idea.

wow, 7 redundant posts in a row caused by kookster … mods, please shorten the thread … after the OP mentions sliders explicitly.

therimmer96 suggests that ratio defines recharge-time / speed.
But the ratio should be achievable no matter the size. Which gives big ships another advantage over small ones : the jump distance therimmer96 proposed with it.

BUT I think it's OK if larger distances (by large dimension) also increases the reload time (counter to ratio),
The penalty could be 10% increased reload time for each 8x increase in volume.
    3x3x5 drives (125) may have a penalty of 0%
    9x9x15 drives (855) may have a penalty of 10%
50*50*75 drives (190'500) may have a penalty of 32% increase in reload
With this, small ships can easier run away, but big ships could launch interceptors or use warp-interdiction + stop+damage beams.
