What purpose does this serve? Why is this option here? I don't get it. Why wouldn't you want people reading your page?

I've personally edited my profile page to not make sense at all :p
From my profile:

• Location: Somewhere in the Bunny system
• Occupation: Nibbling on carrots

And my signature also isn't that serious :D
Conclusion: the internet can be fooled

Ps: I recently created an account for KSP using a completely fake name (Funny Bunny). Quite hilarious if you think about it. The internet can detect so many things, but it doesn't realise that Fuuny can't possibly be a normal first name (Bunny as surname also is strange, but not entirely impossible).

Oh, and I realise this is off-topic. Just one last thing: clicking on the location name sends you to google maps. Can you believe it seriously searched for "somewhere in the Bunny system", on earth!

I, for example, just don't put info I wouldn't like people to know about on my page in the first place. That way I don't evn have to block my page to protect my private data.
