I've been using this for Minecraft for years and for Starmade since I started playing it. If you're as sick of the buggy, asymmetrical build helpers as I am, this might be just your thing. (at least until we get a fix for build helpers to make them symmetrical)

Could you guys tell me what sort of benefits these programs give you? Can you actually import something, or is it just for visualization purposes?

It's to help make a curved shape look good. You can do it manually, but a program makes it easier.

I use this tool, it can even create a body of rotation from a bezier curve.
