When the launcher downloads an update of the StarMade game, is the connection encrypted? Could someone intercept the transmission or inject malicious code into it? Is there a way that the launcher can verify that nobody has injected any code into it during the download etc? In other words, is there some sort of certificate for the StarMade download that is checked and verified that would make sure that there was not a man-in-the-middle attack?

Yes, the launcher does check hashcodes.
