Just wondering since it'd be a nice thing since a few of the missing things for the Bobby's AI is a way to command them while not docked to you, a return to docking point setting and command, and the ability to set them to target salvage targets with salvagers. This would make it so someone would need to simply babysit a fleet of mining ships and drones for a few hours and just call them back before jumping to base. That said it makes them a good target for the AI and players, also some ships might wander out of range of the fleet command if called back while trying to get to something.

This would also give another use for the marker beam too but that's another thing by itself. :)

Eh, I wouldn't call it too OP considering that the window where you actually mine asteroids is fairly small.

I haven't mined an asteroid except for fun in weeks. You eat a couple of planets and you basically have all the resources you could ever want.

    Paint. Oh god the paint.
My factory is processing ten million units of fucking paint.

but yeah, other than paint, don't bother with asteroids :|

It would make resource-gathering fun for those who don't want to mine. It might have to be intentionally nerfed to avoid griefers and careless players from stripping entire systems bare. For instance, for an autominer, there should probably be a limit of one beam output per salvage computer and a maximum limit of salvage computers per autominer AI. (E.g. 9) Waffleboard autominers would be OP, regardless of whether the AI controlled a single salvage computer with 100 outputs, or 100 salvage computers. Salvage drones might be OP if you drop hundreds of them, so automining ships (drones) should probably be nerfed somehow or even eliminate the option for salvage targeting on non-turret AI.

I'm envisioning a salvaging ship with auto-mining turrets leaving deep ruts in small asteroids as it passes through on its way to a big mining asteroid. On the other hand, with all the nerfs I've outlined above, existing logic-driven salvagers might be good enough for now without any additional programming.

I have a factory that does nothing but produce paint.

But I ate enough asteroids before moving up to planets that I still don't even think about needing more.

    seriously though

Even if salvage drones weren't limited in number of beams and such, I imagine that they would be a prime target for pirates (players and NPCs alike). Just in case, make it so that mining drones appear on the scanner, so anyone hostile could specifically find and target them.

If they can be shot down and they cost resources, then they're by default not OP. Could potentially be somewhat laggy, though, and for them to not suck we need a lot more asteroids per sector.

I wouldn't necessarily want salvage drones. However I would love to have salvage turrets that could target non-factioned, non-piloted, overheated ships.

if asteroid density was increased tenfold (where there are entire fields) drones would be amazing for asteroid operations.

and huge targets for enemies :3

I'm am still hoping that Salvage gets turned into an effect. Salvage missiles anyone? Or salvage Cannons? Then they would already be integrated into the turrets. The AI would need a "Target Salvage" setting though.

I meant more like in giant clumps (like large fields akin to the Asteroid belt of our system and such)
Well thats what I mean. The densest part of our asteroid belt is so sparse in real life that you can't even see one asteroid when standing on another. Real life asteroid belts are nothing like what we see in game or in Star Wars. You could fly right through the densest part of our belt and never even know it.

That's why Real Life Space: The Game doesn't garner as much enthusiasm as the next Star Wars game. Real space is pretty boring, or very interesting and then you die. Games need that curve to be a little flatter. :p
