He just placed them sideways, but the direction they shoot is not different.
It is only different if they are connected to a Weapons Computer that is placed sideways too, but you need somebody else (than the pilot in the core) to be in that computer itself, cus you have to be in that specific computer to fire sideways, else, they will still fire forward like normal guns.
