Oh goodie, Another fleet thread! Well, sit back kiddies and enjoy reading the eye-popping, brain-melting wall of text that is..

    THE FREELANCERS FLEET GUIDE

First off, Who are the Freelancers?

The Freelancers are a rag-tag group of adventurers, former pirates, outcasts and renegades that roam the new systems looking for work. As such, their fleets draw from several different production companies however most follow the rule 'Shields save ships'. They also frown on the use of Kings blood heat-tracking missiles due to their unreliable nature and the fact that don't allow for precise strikes.

Companies!? What companies do they buy from?

    The Hilrus corporation Range

The Hilrus corporation started out as a civilian company – Producing transports and mining ships for the traders guild. However, When the pirate threat crew to considerable levels, the company produced a one off light mining model peppered with a couple additional shields and a pair of long anti-matter cannons that replaced a pair of the salvage arrays. The result was an immensely popular aggressive-mining platform that rocketed the company to fortune. With its new market found, it changed its focus to produce small lightly armed strike craft and civilian transports. From time to time however they produce a few models of heavily armed small-scale gunships. They are commonly turned to by the Freelancers because of their reliable, multipurpose cheap ships.

    Maker Industrial Range

Maker industrial was once a large mining organization with close ties to both the Hilrus corporation and the traders guild – Allegiances that have gotten them out of trouble and back into work more than once. After trying their hand at combat designs they found that, like Hilrus, they had a knack for it. When the freelancers were looking for repair ships and light fighters, Maker Industrial was the cheapest on a long list of recommendations.

    The Earndilian Privateer Force Range.

Formerly a 'private army' for hire, They found themselves operating as an impromptu extension of the Freelancers when they helped them defend against a rather large trader guild assault force at the battle of shop 14. The two found their tactics intermingled quite well and eventually the two merged. Although the older members of both organizations still see the joint as a temporary alliance, many of the newer remembers simply see the EPF as another part of the Freelancers. Most of the ship designs the Earndilian pirates used are still used now in various support-fire roles.

    Fresh Innovations Range

A new company that focuses on capital ships. The traders guild has been supporting them financially as they get set up under the 'fair space' anti-monopoly laws. Their engineers proved themselves able pilots when the FSU v2 was attacked in its shipyard – They were able to repel the attackers for a solid three hours until a Freelancer strike force headed by the Ripper of Worlds arrived to provide support.

    Karl Shipyards Range

A strange cult-like ex-pirates with a focus on capital ships. They work with the freelancers because, as they claim, their gods demand it instead of the hazard money that draws most to the group. Currently they are known to have constructed only one ship which they have given to to the freelancers. They refuse, however, to let anyone other than their own people pilot this 'unholy' ship. Despite their superstitions around ships, they are a solid ally and an excellent group of pilots.

Ooh, Fan plot! I sure do like me some juicy fanon! So what kind of ships do they sell?

    The Hilrus ANT Transport

Among one of the first ships Hilrus ever created, the Hilrus ANT is a small and fast transport vessel designed for ferrying pilots around vast spaces and acting as taxi's around the spacious internal compartments of capital ships and large space stations. It is loving called 'The flying soda-can' by its pilots because of its profile. It most notable feature is that it can be easily modified to carry additional crew or resources and can be extremely useful addition to any mining operation. It comes by default with a single shield core, a docking port and a faction module. The Ant found its home in the Freelancers fleets because of its usefulness.

    EPF Silat Attack Craft

A light and agile attack craft originally designed for being deployed on-mass from swarm cruisers to raid miners, it found itself in the Freelancers as a scout craft as well as an armed transport. It offers very minimal shields and weaponry and, on its own, its not much of a threat to anything larger than an ANT transport. Its lack of heavy hull makes it easy pickings for most targets. It is most commonly used as an escort for the ANT – Attaching to the ants built in docking port when things are quiet.

    The Hilrus Fighter Bomber (HFB)

One of the first ships created by the Hilrus engineers after their change over into the fighter market was, in effect, simply a scaled up Ant transport. After they observed its effectiveness at getting around (and in some cases inside) heavier ships, they rescaled and refurbished an Ant to contain a small array of anti-matter cannons and a D100 missile rack. This became the first prototype HFB. Like its smaller brother, The HFB carries a faction module and a set of shields to defend against other ships of its size while it moves into deliver its payload.

Its only downsides are its lack of reinforced Armour which means that, without a skilled pilot, more agile or well armed fighters can easily put it down and its lacking power-array which prevents it from using both its engines and its anti-matter cannons in prolonged fire fights. Efforts are underway to build another ship of its size that addresses these issues without sacrificing existing features.

A notable feature is small docking port it has on the bottom – designed to carry small mines or other payloads. It can also carry an ant, acting as a two person transport. It was adopted by Whites Freelances primarily for deploying bombs.

    EPF D180 'Blink' fighter

One of the newer designs used by the EPF, The blink carries a prototype cloaking system into battle along with twin heat-seeking missile racks. The cloaking system should, in theory, allowing it to drop out of sight, preventing precision use of weapons against it. It sacrificed shields and firepower for this capability and, as such should not be used without support. Its superior engines and heat-seeking missiles mean that it is best suited to get up close, 'blinking' away while its missiles reload. Freelancers are not very fond of this fighter because it goes against their standing traditions of honest toe-to-toe fighting however they can not deny its effectiveness. The Hilrus corporation has recently expressed interest in helping refine the cloaking system with the hope to improve the duration of the effect.

EPF Phalanx Missile Light support platform

One of the oldest designs as well as one of the more reliable at the battle of shop 14, The Phalanx has proved itself with age. Along with its bigger brother, the Reaper, The Phalanx is a solid support-fire platform that, in groups, can easily tear apart larger ships. Its armed with Twin Separate-firing D100 racks and Twin Separate-firing BB racks, all of which are surprisingly sized considering the side of the ship. The only issue it suffers from is its lack of anti-matter cannons which makes it not fit for combat without fighter support.

    MI Mark 1 'Cheesy' Fighter

The Cheesy was built as part of a join effort with Hilrus to fill the role of shielded light fighter to support the HFB – It was advertised to be the Spitfire to the HFB's Lancaster. It carries a low-damage anti-matter cannon array and a pair of bunker buster missiles to help harass fighters. The EPF and the Hilrus corporation have both offered to help improve its weapons systems but have been turned away by Maker Industrial stating 'any additional weapons systems would distract pilots from the ships role – Begin a distraction'. As such, its pilots are not always the happiest and often request extra pay for 'going to battle with a couple of pea-shooters on a tin can'.

The Hilrus Gustavus small scale operations platform

In a radial change in design style from their standard design style, The Gustavus has a box like profile with individual weapons systems encased in different containers as opposed to Hilrus's classic 'all-in-one' tube design. The Gustavus was initially designed for larger scale planetary mining and ship salvaging operations as well as support fire roles in hostile territory and carries four weapon pods to fill these roles.

The side pods carry a pair of heavy D100 missile racks, a pair of similar sized bunker buster racks and twin heavy anti-matter cannons which make up for a majority of its firepower. The underbelly pod contains the salvage array and a large anti-matter cannon array designed to supplement the twin heavy cannons. The roof pod originally carried a huge D100 array for cracking open planets however after field testing revealed it was commonly used by pilots in during support fire operations it was switched out for a heavy bunker buster missile typically used to devastate larger slower targets. Its downsides are its inefficient power systems, its considerably minimalist shields for its size and its limited field of vision around the cockpit Some pilots report it has trouble firing and moving without running into power issues while other complain how the cores ejection system tends to drop users outside the ship.

EPF Reaper Missile Heavy support platform

The bigger brother of the Phalanx, it addresses its lack of anti-matter cannons by introducing 8 of them embedded in the hull of the ship. The twin D100 racks have now been twin-linked instead of separate-firing to grant them more of a punch. The twin separate-firing heavy bunker bunker racks have been kept and have been scaled them up accordingly. The design also has a unique off-center cockpit design which its pilots call both a blessing and a curse. Field testing has shown the reaper works well with Obliviplex's at dispatching smaller swarms of fighters and, when coupled with HFB, can put a serious dent in a Hammer-Head. At the battle of shop 14, one of these ships was credited with killing 3 Isanth IV's.

    The Hilrus Obliviplex Shield Frigate

Nicknamed 'The battery', the Obliviplex was originally a requisition done for Whites Freelancers designed to provide a larger combat platform that the Gustavus in an intimidating but well armored package. The result was something very similar to the older fighter bomber design with a far more advanced systems. It carries a remarkable 3 layer thick reinforced hull, an extremely powerful shield system and the patented 'XYZAbuse' power-array. For weapons, it carries 4 extremely long anti-matter cannons that run the length of the ship, 4 bunker buster missile racks and twin heavy D100 missiles.

Its designed to draw fire away from its allies to its superior hull and shields and, when supporting a small group of fighters, a couple of these can easily tear apart larger waves of enemies.

It also has a bitching pirate skull with glowing eyes on the top - The freelancers just couldn't turn their noses up at how awesome that looked.

The Hilrus Hammer-head large scale operations platform.

Ongoing efforts to improve the Gustavus resulted in the Hammer-head weapons platform. It's much larger than its little brother and is found most at home salvaging the wrecks of other ships or completely harvesting entire planets. One of the first ships produced by the Hilrus corporation using their 'XYZAbuse' power-array. The Hammer-head has an extensive shield array (although not quite as large as the Obliviplex). It has 2 large salvage arrays set up in 'brush' formats for optimal harvesting speed. It also carries 8 powerful anti-matter cannons, 12 D100 racks in the side pods and one extremely large BB array in the underbelly weapons pod. It is also the only ship in their range to use turrets – twin Snapper turrets (armed with small anti-matter cannons) and one Erickson turret (wielding twin heavy anti-matter cannons and a small D100 missile rack). Both types of turrets have their own shield arrays, power systems and faction-aligned bobby modules to automaticly protect the ship against fighters. Its major downfalls however is the thin and somewhat scrappy hull – Due to financing issues during its development the hull is only 2 blocks thick and in some places made out of conventional non-hardened hull instead of the hardened hull which normally comes as standard on most ships of its size.

    Dreadnought prototype 'FSU' v3

The latest version of the FSU from fresh innovations is being built at a steady pace. Even without its hull entire in place, the ships extensive shielding is enough to shrug off the planet-cracker missile from the hammer-head. Its experimental design mimics the Ripper of worlds and uses a huge number of assorted anti-matter cannons to give a sort of rapid fire shotgun effect. Much like the previous version, this prototype rushed into a fighting state during a battle and once again proved its worth against the raiders. However, with its previous shipyard destroyed, The ship is currently being moved to the new shipyard at station 1913. It is predicted to be the largest ship in the fleet when construction is complete however, as it stands, it is smaller than the Ripper of Worlds. Its primary down fall at its current stage in development is its power drain – It simply cant move and shoot at the same time without depleting its power-cells. Also, as it is not complete, it depends solely on the shield systems to protect its exposed components.

Ripper of worlds (aka 'How can we sneak in a chaos ship?')

A massive cruiser that appeared as suddenly as Karl Shipyards did – The Ripper of worlds is a huge capital class armed with a huge array of anti-matter cannons configured to fire like a gigantic shotgun. This is devastating on any ships smaller than it as the blast can overwhelm shields on any frigates and simply sweeps any fighters hoping to use speed to avoid fire. It also has a worlds-end grade bunker buster missile rack that is known for wiping out whole planets. It also has a salvage array for purposes unknown – its levels of devastation it brings mean there is normally very little left to salvage. It is currently the largest in the fleet and works at its best with a 4 man crew.

And there you have it folks. My 3 days work all in one huge wall of text. Any comments, suggestions, improvements? I'm all ears.

Lets see how long it is until someone TL;DR's the thread or acts all superior because the fleet is made of 'noob-ships' that aren't anywhere near as cool like the 400k mass one they downloaded yesterday on their brothers friends cousins secret server that we'll never see...
