ah wasn't thinking bottom up and such. I was assuming the botto0m would face the docking block like now.

how to make a docking clamp

Step one create a ship that IS a dock for your supermassive ship, make it as small and compact as possable with the core in the exact center.

step two is to create a dock on your station for the docking clamp. then simply dock your adapter to the station, then your ship to the adapter.

this alows you to bypass the station based docking port and intersect it with blocks creating the oportunity to create 0 clearance docking and things like airlock walkways that would normally intersect into a docking area, just make sure it doesnt intercsect the docking area of the adapter.

using this you can clip into the ships docking area as much as you want.

    dockception.

this works best with large ships and ships with odd core placements (as this lets you adjust the docking port on the adapter to an off center position to center your ship in the area you want)

You do not need to include room for the docking area of the adapter in the station dock as it doesnt count towards the area the adapter takes up, only the actual blocks take up space, so build a simple core+dock+enhancer adapter to be as compact as you can and you win!

good observation Chances_Ghotst. I didn't realize you could put ANYTHING from any entity into a docking area without it insta releasing things.

i do have just one issue you overlooked, that method requires you still get out to the main ship, then get into the dock, adapter, and use it to actually dock. still having the problem as before you mite as well forget it and do the damn spacewalk any way. its not a solution at all its a workaround and a poor one at the.

nope you can just dock right to the docking adapter after you install it the first time. and you never have to space walk, simply press the up arrow after docking to the adapter for the first installation and you will switch into the adapters core.

you can also use the docking adapter method to create giant landing pads with multiple reconfigurable docks on them.

Docking zones CAN overlap each other as well as long as the ships inside them wont overlap.

also up arrow.... no more space walks, you can use this trick to teleport formt eh ship to the docking adapters core and then exit the adapters core if you want to as well as it working the other way around you can enter the adapters core then swap into the ship docked to it.

you can use this to create walkways and teleport around your home base by simply placing core docks areound and using the up arrow to swap what core your in and exit at the desired location.
