System names need some work

As hard as they tried to prevent any such issues, the makers of the original "Elite" accidentally shipped with a system named "Arse". I think it's in Galaxy 6.

When you read a dictionary released by a shool, you stumble across this word too.

I wouldn't remove it, just make sure such a system is not too often or right at spawn.

Agreed; you should only find those sorts of things out in the Arse-end of the galaxy.


At any rate, in all seriousness system names do need a bit of work. Half the systems are one syllable (Ga, Ve, Ka, Car, Ce, El...) and a third of them are really weird-looking, even for alien names (Gammascorolux, Alphanombifrey, Galviscorininum...).

I wasn't serious about fixing the naming system. I just found it amusing that of all things it chose, it chose this.

A sense of humor is a virtue.

Maybe we humans prefer words which have some pattern with AEIOU letters.

3x O/U is too much in a row.
3x A/E also need to be intercepted with i/o/u in most cases.
It also should have 3-4 of these letters - with more, abbreviations start.

This makes a name distinguishable.​

Except some funny explorer has a sense for humour (Uno'optu'um, Ban'da'banana'panda), just because he likes this pattern of repeating letters.

In which case it is related to already existing content or the other letters (nptm) are used to create an unique sound-pattern.​

I think it is impossible to fix unless you have access to more research on sound-patterns in the human language(s).

Actually the 3x rule really only applies sometimes.

Ukurunu, Athala, Anakara, Imindri, Isirini, Okono, Enserea... All sound fine to me. Just really really really vowel-heavy but that's besides the point...
