I think the issue is more like de-sync error between server and client, for shield amounts. Sometimes i see enemies fire at me with antimatter, but i don\'t *seem* to take any shield damage, whereas in reality the shields are going down. If you fight on a big ship that has no way to avoid shots, i can imagine this bug makes combat impossible.
Could be related to other bug, where enemy projectiles seem to be firing to entirely different direction, than where they are actually moving on server side. Yesterday i saw pirate fire his frontal antimatter cannons 90 degrees sideways.
