Maybe I am doing something wrong but I can't seem to attach any blocks to my station. I start a station by pressing "m" and it places a Grey Hull block; I guess that is the default block. I want to use the building block but I can't add that either. I keep getting a message stating that my character is in the way no matter where I am. I could be as far away as possible while just barely able to attemp to add a block and still get the message.

That sometimes happens the first time you place a block in a sector.
That fix is solved by logging out and coming back (just restarting the game), that refreshes the sector data and your location, it \"clears the cache\" as it says when entering new sectors. Then placing the Build Block on top of that default block. Then pressing R to enter the build block, and you will be in build mode, just like on a ship, just that this one doesn\'t fly.
At least that works for me and everybody I know, who I told this hint, and it worked, if it doesn\'t, make sure your ship has some distance too, restart more times, or call somebody else to place the build block for you... somebody you trust.
But you shouldn\'t have a problem with it after refreshing the sector data , it should work.

Congratulations :D
Next step is to make it big, nice, with many rooms, with a gravity unit ( so you walk on it, not float arround liek a fly), with defence turrets, etc.
