    Happy.png Hello, Markus_McCloud again.

So recently, Terraria came out on the Nintendo 3DS. That got me thinking: Should StarMade get a console edition much like Minecraft and Terraria have?

I know when and if it does, it wouldn't be as massive as the PC edition (perhaps having map sizes reduced to a single galaxy), but reduced features haven't stopped Minecraft CE and Terraria CE from having their own followings.

Puzzled.png So, WDYT? Should Schine and the rest of the SM team port it to consoles once they finish the full release?

Well, the only real concern I have, is that a controller doesn't have enough controls for everything, that may come in the future.

You bring up a good point, but at the same time, some of the controls are a bit redundant. For instance, opening up the inventory allows you to switch to the navigation tab just by clicking.

You don't have a mouse pointer when using console controls. at least it wouldn't be the best solution.

Yes and it should be on the PS4.
Or PS5, if it takes that long.

That way it really isn't competing against Microsoft's Minecraft

Just for reference, it's an alpha if features are still being added. It becomes a beta when features are nailed down and it's just refining the details.

As for the question, I don't know. Minecraft is unpleasant for me to play on a console.

No, frell no! I've seen things go down the drain when going console (Minecraft, for example). I've noticed quality of ye olde stuff go down MAJORLY over the years with new games due to devs dumbing every damn thing down for consoles and new generations (difference between good old Fallout 1&2 and new and butchered Fallout 3, NV and 4).

Just finish Starmade on PC first, please. PC has always been the best platform for hardcore moddable space sim games.

    - games don't necessarily "degrade" when being ported to console. graphics and gameplay are two different aspects. arkham knight was better in console
    - fallout 3+ was gud too
    - star citizen and no man's sky are space games and they look great on ps4, I think starmade has a place in consoles

Isn't happening. SC is a PC exclusive. I think you're thinking about Elite on Xbone

The simple issue I see with this, even if schine had the time to port the game, or could afford to hire someone else to do it, would be that is it even worth it?

Consoles struggle to play games as it is right now, with many games not even running at 1080p, and we want starmade on these machines, machines that we wouldn't consider using for starmade if it was a PC.

The current-gen consoles are low-end PCs from around 2013. They have nowhere near enough power to run Starmade, they can barely even run Minecraft.

    1) That's because Warner Bros. INTENTIONALLY nerfed the PC edition to make the console version, which is more expensive, more popular and sell more copies. That's corporate bureaucracy not evidence that consoles can play Starmade (Which they can't, not powerful enough)

I actually strait up refuse to buy console ports these days... with a few exceptions. Consoles are yesterdays technology for tomorrows games and even putting graphics aside will always be less capable than computers. When making a game for a PC you can program it for PC specs when you expect the game to come out not the rigid system you are forced to work with when making a console game. You are also limited to how many controls you have access to. I do love Skyrim and Fallout but I often wonder how amazing they would have been if they were not programmed for the lowest common denominator. I also always have to install mods before they are ever "playable" in my book. At the very least inventory tweaks because I am not limited to half a dozen keys like on a console. Of course with PC I can also choose to run a controller if it is better for that current game but no such love for consoles, they could easily make consoles have keyboard and mouse support but they actively prevent this because it would be unfair to those using a controller.

I would be ok with a port to consoles providing the following:

    1. PC version comes first. Features should be first designed with the PC in mind and then changed to fit the console version.

    2. The Dev's actually want to port it. Really, if they don't feel like it but do it because people want them too it would just end up being a lack luster port.

    3. The ports get no extra content, that is "Exclusive". I hate that kind of stuff.

Other then that, Assuming they could come up with a good console UI, and optimize the game to the point that consoles wouldn't melt, I don't see a reason not too.
