Imagine your screen split into 9 areas.
The centre is normal view. Maybe 60° instead of 85° per default.
The other areas around it are basically the rest up to 360° in that direction, skewed to fit everything into that small area.
I would not complain to not see that many details on the outer 8 areas.
We could even just take a 2D view of a ship (outermost blocks along an axis) for easier rendering before a blur to hide glitches and put focus on the main part in the centre of your screen.
