I'm planning to make a new ship in the future and I was wondering if SMEdit would be more effective for making it than in game. Would you recommend it?

SMedit can be used to import models, why not make it in blender or google sketchup and import it (SMedit always felt awkward to use to me)?

It depends. If you have the physical model then yes, or if you can make a model then yes. Smedit is great for that. The downside is once you make the blueprint, you can't alter it. The core will be placed in the exact center of the ship, so change that if need be. Importing it to starmade will then give you a blueprint with lots of ugly extra blocks. I smooth out the entire hull with another color before removing the excess.

    Also SMEdit needs some updating.
    • Does it still produce files with the format of x month ago? (the game auto-converts it to new, but not backward)
    • It will not support rails.
