    This is not a ship classification post. There are so many opinions I'm not going to touch that.

    Small Ship Docking Classification
    It would be nice if there was a boxdim classification for small ships for docking purposes for the following reasons. Mass doesn't come into it as it just needs to be able to dock or not.

    With FTL drives coming, depending on the mechanism you might find them hard to use on small ships. Or you don't want to modify your ready great masterpiece. Even if it isn't hard or expensive your likely to find more people wanting to grab a lift with someone with a jump drive, or a capital with their FTL drive version. Especially since you can use actuators and a faction permission module to allow or disallow someone outside your faction from docking.

    Jump drives would make it possible to jump a carrier in (hot drop) and launch a bunch of bobby AI drones. Requiring a large amount of drones or small craft if you can get enough pilots.

    Examples:

    That way you can say to someone I have a A2 fighter and need a FTL lift. Or I have 5 A3 docking bays spare for hitchhikers.

    Rather than my ship is 21x41x30m, or I have a dock but I'm not sure if you fit. Fly 10km to me and find out.

    You have a carrier and your looking through the community content for a small craft blueprint that fits in your docking bays or the other way around a carrier for your fighter.

    example classification system
    Something simple like
    Length
    A=11m
    B=15m
    C=21m
    D=25m
    etc
    Width and or height
    1=11m
    2=13m
    3=15m
    4=17m
    5=19m

    So a C3 small craft would fit in a 21m length dock with a width and/ or height up to 15. It doesn't have to be that exact size just fit in it.

    Is there an existing system out there already that I haven't heard about? If not, to get something like this to work you would need one of the more prolific ship builders (preferably carriers or small craft) putting designs in community content with their classification system. I haven't posted a single ship as I don't think I'm artistic enough so I could talk about to oblivion and not get anything done.

    Jump Booster
    I'm a Traveller RPG fan, which is where this inspiration came from or a lot of other anime. You have a high performance small craft or stealth ship etc. that you made or is existing. You don't want to slow it down or mess it up adding a jump drive. Build a ship designed to jump, ship dock and maybe tank damage. It will require high power output for jumping anyway so may as well have a lot of shield regen for when you leave it unattended. Make it cheap just incase. Just write its name down somewhere, when you have to search for it.

    Dock fighter to jump booster. Switch between ships. Jump. Switch back. Undock and fly about. Search for and Return to jump booster. Rinse repeat.

    This will also be probably be helped by a small craft docking classification, which is why I put both topics under one post. Most ships posted in community content are good looking so redesigning something to fit your small craft might not be so easy.

    Hmm nice system. I just figured out a conversion formula for dimensions to enhancers.
    Currently format Length, Width, Height note that ingame the dimensions are listed as Length, Height, Width

    L0=7x7x7
    L1 or L1-1-1=9x9x9

    enhancers in a direction N = ([N x 2] + 7) meters
    meters to number of enhancers in direction D = ([D - 7] / 2) round up

    With >99 enhancers it might get a pain to count
    Just use fewer numbers:
    1. count digits (3=100+, 4=1000+, 9=server-crashing)
    2. add most significant digit
    3. - [optional: second significant digit, or use 1st=odd or 1st+5 to show 1.5]
    4. size ratio width/height OR step 1-3 for length.
    5. size ratio length/width OR step 1-3 for height.
    Size ratio either being {6=.1, 7=.2, 8=.3, 9=.5, 0=1, 1=2, 2=3, 3=5, 4=10 }

    Actually I just found an easier way of checking the docking size than counting. The only problem is identifying which port is which.

    I'm glad I remember the rough sizes of the turrets I'm placing on my current construction so it was easy to figure out.
    For instance one docking group is listed in the construction tab as:
    Total blocks 77 in 1 group
    Docking Area (-30,-8,-50) - (30,8,50)

    The difference between the two sets of co ordinates is the docking size so just double the positive number and add one for the center
    so that's a docking size of 61,17,101 in width, height, length which using the above formula is 27,5,47, Then in the correct order that would be
    47,27,5 so a L47-27-5 turret.

    That would make the ridiculous docks for transporting other heavy ships at L233-47-47 :eek:
