I would bet that this has probably already been suggested, but I think its important enough for multiplayer that it should have its own thread.
My suggestion is to add some from of "sign" block to the game which would display messages to other players. This could either require an interaction (like going up to the sign and pressing 'r') or the block itself could always display the message. Perhaps there could be a way of linking signs together to make the text bigger or allow for more text?
