Ive been thinking, the Starmade community already has a a couple dominant ship classification systems, but why not one for what a ship is mainly geared for?

NOTE: i will be making references to this ship classification system:http://star-made.org/content/blitzwings-guideline-ship-classifications

    Heres an explanation:

Let's say your building a ship, and build a thick hull and strong shields but arm the ship itself lightly and its slow as heck but has good turrets, but by ship classifaction its a battlecruiser. Now when you look at your ship, and look at it's classification don't you think there needs to be some more? So let's call this ship "Carl", and its build a Leviathan because its so big and bulky for its classification, so it would be alternitevly be called a "Carl-Class Leviathan Battlecruiser", or a "Carl- Class Leviathan".

Now, the purpose of this thread:

This thread is to discuss and create a classification system for the roles (in other words, what its best at with a cool name) that can be put with most other standard classification systems as a more detailed class of ship.

Now, for the classes(So far, since this is a discussion):

Science Ship/Vessel- A ship focused away from conventional weaponry and more towards things like Pulsators and powerdrain beams, and less focus towards speed and armoring and towarsd jamming devices, cloaking, and shields.

Leviathan- Large and bulky, with most of it focused towards pure defense with a thick hull and shields with slow maneverability and weak engines, but has decent turrets and is suited for "Tanking"

Gunship- A ship where maneuverability is high and is very fast, with more weaponry than shields, best suited as an escort or in squads due to its weaker shields

Carrier: A ship mainly made to carry large amounts of fighters, it is uually one of the largest ships on the battlefeild, but is weak and slow due to it's design made only with carrying fighters in mind with the hope of having support ships.

NOTE: since this is a discussion, feedback is encouraged and suggestions, from adjustments to current classes to new classes (but remember, they might not be added)

Please, I understand that everyone loves a good ship classification post, but this is obnoxious how a new one pops up every day. Chances are, it\'s just a copy of another, already established classification thread. I understand that yours will be discussion based, but we have more than enough class threads as is. Thank you for understanding.

This is not an all around classification sytem, but more of a description of what the ship is, loosley defined by terms like \"Leviathan\", and \"Gunship\". It doesnt matter what the mass is, it could still be a Leviathan even if it close to being a small frigate. Somewhat similar to in star wars, a Star Destroyer is not defined specifically by its size, but by its role and unofficially its shape. And of course, theres going to be something similar, especially as the community grows. Now from the sound of your full statement, it sounds like you want me to just kill the classification system right now, which isn\'t going to happen.

and on a side note, the latest SHIP classification system I see was made around 5 days ago, with a turret classification system made only recently

I took averages of 10 different systems and put them together into one.

Ships SHOULD be classified by their mass and weapons power and NOT by what they are used for. This is simply because classes such as \'\'Cruiser\'\' or \'\'Battleship\'\' refer to the size of the vessel - they don\'t specify what the ship is meant for.

During my research, what I found was that people tend to make up niche classes like Bombers, which don\'t intorduce anything new into the game at all and are completely overlapping with major classes. These could be sub-types of a ship but not it\'s main class.

A Star Destroyer is a Destroyer Class ship - it\'s not because it was meant to cause destruction and devastation, but because it\'s Destroyer-size.

Classification by size allows for an easy comparison of different ships and easy \'\'matchmaking\'\' between them. You know that it will be an even match between 2 Destroyers and that you will need more than 1 cruiser to take on a Battleship or a Dreadnought. You can name it anything you want but at the end of the day, it still fits firmly into the class system.

These are not meant in any way to define its main class, but are a more specific description of what it is and what it\'s best at.

Look at the overall difference between these two ships, this is an axample of how the Star Destroyer classification varies

Mind you that is Star Wars ^^ Things in it get pretty big and thus 500 meters difference between two Star Destroyers isn\'t very significant when you have a 900km diameter Death Star.

How about in starcraft, where battlecruisers come in several classes of battlecruiser? Minotaur class battlecruisers come in at half the size of behemoth class battlecruisers(about 600-700m), and gorgon class battlecruisers are even larger than the behemoth class? They\'re all battlecruisers, despite one being only 300m or so and the largest at roughly 1 km...
