What purpose does it serve?

Clearing clutter.
If you don\'t want someone to steal your ship design, and/or you don\'t want there to be an extra piece of junk floating around in space to run into.

How about we are able to sell out ships directly back to the shop without having to take them apart first because I usually just take my ship apart and then sell the pieces

This would be good if astronaought mode weapons get implemented, meaning if you get boarded in faction wars and are going to loose your ship anyway, may as well blow it up and stop the enemy getting there hands on it
