Ship Roles

    You know what would be cool, if your ship could have a role that supports specific systems like:
    Mining ship, 5% bonus ore/shards with salvage modules
    Scout Ship: 10% Bonus Scanner reload and 5 % thrust -10% shields.

    But how to do that?
    My idea, if you place the core, you can open the role menu with "r" while looking at the core. Once selectet you cant change the role again to prevent abuse.

    What do you think?

    Btw: Im not talking about something like "Assault Ship + 10% Weapons damage" :)

    I like this idea, it could promote intelligent single-role designs that exploit the benefit they have been given well.

    I've always thought about a system like this and for some reason I think it's because it was mentioned maybe in one of the Dev Q&As? Basically this would be part of the not yet implemented shipyard system and could probably be done in a few ways.

    Here is one way(again this might be straight of the Q&A cause I can hear Calbiri saying it in my head lol)

    Add one new block, we'll call it a shipyard block. Place this block on a complete ship and it "locks" the ship. You can no longer enter build mode and add/remove blocks but you get the benefit of being able to rebuild damaged blocks by bringing the ship back to the shipyard. The rebuild would be based on the "locked" blueprint captured at the moment you put the shipyard block.

    You also get the ability to specialize the ship through interaction with this block with options like the stated above or these:
    • Mining +10% ore/shards but -10% maneuverability and jump drive charge
    • Defensive +10% shield cap/regen but - %10 weapon damage/reload
    • Offensive +10% weapon damage/reload but -10% shield cap/regen
    I'm just throwing these bonus numbers out there with no thought but they need to be balanced so that there is always an equal or greater negative to each positive bonus. There is a lot to consider in terms of balance so it would have to be way more thought out than the few minutes I took to make this post.

    One thing to consider by implementing this via a block is what to do when the block is destroyed? Do you then lose the ability to repair your ship at the shipyard and the bonus? Or just the bonus but the shipyard still remembers your ship for repair? Would it be better to have this done through the core or the faction module instead of a new block?

    I think ship roles should be built into the ship by design, not by some magical pull-down menu. If you want 10% more firepower, install 10% more weapons. If you want a bonus to mining, install more mining beams.

    I do think that the game still does not support role-based combat very well, although it is improving. These adjustments however, can easily be made server-side if the admin is willing to take that step. The base game is coming along nicely.

    Roles of a ship are and should stay based on how you design them. An aircraft carrier is such because it was built that way. Your way would be like building a destroyer and classifying it as an aircraft carrier, and magically expecting it to be a better carrier just because you call it one. It doesn't work that way.

    i think it would be better if the core or any dedicated role classification beacon etc was to calculate what class of ship it was from the quantity of systems fitted to the ship, re calculating when the ship is either loaded or build mode is exited

    To Lazarus78: It seems you got my idea wrong. If you select a carrier and make it a destoyer you dont get a better carrier, you only get a destroyer, thats it.
    You never played a game before where your item, when placed on a specific ship/carakter gets a slight bonus?

    as much as I love RPGs, that aspect would be counter productive to Starmade's design

    a big part of Starmade's appeal is the freedom to make whatever you want. Where you're rewarded or punished for your design choices.

    having passive bonuses as minute as they are would rob the sense of satisfaction you get when you finally design a better ship through innovation/experience/knowledge of the game's mechanics

If you have a salvage and a jump drive computer, you should get no penalty at all. But if you equip your ship with a salvage and jump drive computer, a cannon/cannon, missile/beam, beam/ion weapon system, a cloaker, and a defensive ion system, you only get 70% power generation.

    I think all-purpose ships are already penalized enough with turn rates. It can be aggravating to steer those pigs.

    I have. But in terms of Starmade, I don't think it would work out as you envision.
