Ship into a station?

Just a quick question, is it at all possible to make a ship into a station? like change the core into a shop module or something through SMEdit? I'm not sure if that would work, 'cause I've had a few problems in the past saving stations (things w/o ship cores) through SMEdit.

Also, sorry if this thread is in the wrong section, it's not an technical issue so it' s not for troubleshooting and offtopic doesn't get looked at alot so here it is
