Ship Beacon location.

Would moving the ship beacon to the center of the ship's size be benificial to ship combat?

One issue i've found with combat and a large number of other issues in the game, is that the nav beacon for ships and turrets has been located directly on the core of the object.

The issue with this, is the fact that combat has become a "drill to the other ship's core the fastest" race. another issue with this is the fact that docking also happens on the core and therefore excludes a massive number of ships who don't have centered cores, from docking in places where their size would otherwise fit.

my solution to this is quite simple: move the nav beacon and docking location to the center of the ship's total size. The latter may be a good bit harder than the former, but to move the nav beacon would make targeting a ship's systems essential for disabling it. it would prolong combat and stop insta killing of ships outside of massive out gunning.

    Just... leave the centre empty.
Split your ship into two parts (in front of and behind) the centre and let all AI-controlled weapons miss.

Don't get me wrong, I like it. But there are issues :D

Have you ever tried to make a massive ship which looks like a 2D grid of wires with empty space around Y nodes? And how difficult it is to hit something on it? Especially if you target a lonely, in-the-middle-of-nowhere- core protected solely by very strong shields?

With the mark always being in middle, you could a we with the spider-pig in middle, but build it out of pure hulls and hide your core anywhere :D

the point of the matter is, the battles aren't fun with only the only objective being to core your enemy as fast as possible. they're short and not very fun. At the very least, there should be some way to hide your core that isn't radar jamming.

The devs have already stated that there will be a hp system to fix this (among other things).

Removing the core as an achilles heel will readily solve this issue, as funnybunny said, We plan an HP system based on the blocks of your ship, so that destroying large portions of the enemies ship (or conquering them in other ways) will be the objective, not hitting their core (which at that point can simply be made invulnerable, or nearly so) so that destroying the core isnt even an option or possible. Youll have to blow the ship up, not hit a tiny block that is constantly highlighted.

ok, and might i ask, what of the docking issue? the core always seems to be the place that is centered in the docking box, preventing ships that can fit into docks from actually docking because of an absurd location?

what will happen to the radar jammers? with the HP system will they still have a use in PVP?
