Yeah guys there are some hosts around, like the smelter or others.

For 9$ per GB, what would the server cost me per month, if I had like peaks of 20 players at weekends evenings? Can some server owners tell me their GB rates and player rates?

I am just currious, I don't plan on hosting myself, but it would be interesting for me to know, so some dreaming gets a little more realistic. ;)

Are there other good server hosting services around, or would it be even better to rent a root server instead of a Starmade server?

How far can I modify that host, like the smelter? Is it possible to have own scripts and databases run, and have a website on that server too?

I purposefully opened a new thread, because older ones might not be up to date anymore, and people would have to read through some posts until they reach my questions.

Ah good to know. Now I can figure out how much money it costs by myself. Doesn't seem very cheap to me, like some Minecraft server was in the old days.

    Hey there!

I work for PingPerfect in customer support, but what I say here may be incorrect and is not an official response from the company.

The amount of RAM you need for your server varies massively. RAM usage varies based on how many people connect, what they build, where they go, and how long the servers been online for. It all comes down to how you run your server. Part of the reason some servers limit mass is to keep the RAM usage down. The reason many servers have automated restarts is to clear the RAM as Starmade is known for leaking. The best you can do really is estimate and upgrade as needed.

Picking between renting from a GSP or dedicated hardware is difficult. There's pros and cons to each, and I could write a massive post explaining them (I started writing it and got bored). I always say that a GSP is a good place to start if you've not got an established community already, as you don't know your server is going to take off, and they're the cheaper option. If you do outgrow GSP hosting, then consider moving on to dedicated hardware.

You can't really modify a server when you're with a GSP other than the games own options. That's the downside of a GSP, you're renting a starmade server, not a server. You can't run anything they don't allow. This is for a very good reason, as it if we let customers run stuff, it might cause issues with other customers services, or even break your own. At PingPerfect, if you have something we can provide, we will do our best to provide it, but it's not always possible. Uploading a world from an existing server however is possible.

Webhosting differs from host to host, but it's safe to assume that if they don't mention it, they don't offer it. We offer a small free web hosting package when you rent from us.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I've been admining starmade servers pretty much the entire time I've played.

    Thank you for the information.

I have actually no experience in Starmade servers, but for me it seems like without running some scripts hosting a SM server is not very rewarding.

Things that need scripts from what I gathered: Quests, Buying Ships, Regenerating NPC stations to attack (so players can attack a pirate station and 2 hours later it just regenerates), Sector commands like warping people from A to B under certain conditions (like using weapons for example, or exceeding a ship mass, having a certain good loaded).

The whole pve part can't be set up propperly without scripts. The pvp part stays open pvp without scripts. And I don't know if I need another script to set up shops propperly, because the standard shop settings are not usefull if some special rp-setting is wanted.

And without those stuff you can ofcourse make a SM server, but it wouldn't differ that much from playing on allready established ones.

That's not a rant I am just say what I think about the matter gsp vs dedicated. Maybe one day there exists gsp with some script options that would be great.

So a dedicated virtual server sounds good then, if I would use pingperfect.
