I'm wanting to start working on a project right now, was wondering to what scale most of you build on. I wanted to replicate the Kershan mothership from Homeworld but it's height is 2138m. Just for to see what I'd be working with I started to lay this out, I stopped at the halfway point as the size is even then silly.

I come to the forums to ask as I haven't yet been able to join you guys on the servers as a bad connection on my end has my ping in the 10k range when connecting... it's gonna be bit before the issue is fixed.

Anyhow, as stated above, just looking to see what scales you all build on.

    Cheers!

I think, most of chooses to build things, that could be completed in reasonable timeline.

by looking at the picture and from my personal experience and some rough calculations out of my head, just the hull of kushan mothership should be around 3-5 (lets say 4) million blocks in volume or in other words 3-5 million cubic meters. Just the Hull, imagine that. With tidious builds I could place 30 blocks a minute. Guess that is not the case, so lets say it should be possible to place 200(the fastest way I possibly could in Starmade) blocks a minute. And usually I like to spend like 2 hours a day doing something creative, so lets say, do it only in starmade. By placing 24000 blocks a day I will complete the hull in 125 days. Guess that wont be enough, I need to complete interior also. Complexity slows builds down tremendously, in most cases, for me like 3 times. I know because I have made multi-million block builds in minecraft, altough by using commands, copy, paste, mirror commands. in 500 days I guess we should see the true size of Pride of Hiigara? Wrong, you cant because it is over 2 klicks high. It is the limit of which your builds could be possibly seen.

It\'s important to know your own limits when building. Can you start an enormous project and finish it, or will it end up being wasted time? Usually your first few builds (Once you understand the mechanics behind all the modules) will get progressively bigger until you have a good ship for multiple sizes and you feel perfectly comfortable planning and working on big projects.

For the Homeworld mothership, I suggest making the height (Longest axis) up to 400 blocks. I think that will make it as manageable a build while having enough interior space to put stuff like living quarters, hangars, etc. in it. You might find a better scale to work with, though, so do some expirementing.

You must know your limits. I knew that as a first project, I could not possibly have built a 1:1 scale model of the USS Voyager. I knew my limits, and decided on a 2:1 ratio. If you feel you have Daiz on end, available to build such a large ship, by all means, no one is stopping you. Personally though, I\'d rather build a much smaller ship such as a Frigate or Battlecruiser. Those ships are still pretty darn big 1:1 on starmade.

Thanks for the responses, they were informative.

Seeing as I\'ve never built anything other than square box shelters in Minecraft I\'ve decided any serious projects need to be scaled accordingly until I can get a better grip on designing with voxels. Those corners pieces are by far one of the most frustrating things I\'ve ever come across.

A 2:1, even a 4:1 scale on something 2km tall is way out of my league at the moment. I\'ve started work on a 10:1 , a proof of concept that I can even do it I suppose. Surpisingly for something I\'m doing by eyeball it\'s started out quite nicely. We will see how it goes.

    Cheers!

Bear in mind, that a sector is approx 500m wide. So 2138m- would go through 4 sectors. I think a 1:8 or 1:10 scale is not too bad. Still huge though
