while we all love flying around in our enormous battle cruisers, one thing that throws me off is when the huge main guns go pewpewpewpew, which is kind of silly, and that all the thought i put into making them was "more". So I propose a simple but interesting change to the cannon system:
a single cannon block starts off with low damage and low range, but has a very high set fire rate and projectile speed. As more cannons are added to the chunk, it LOSES projectile speed and fire rate, but gains range and a lot of damage per shot, so damage per second still goes up.
And that's it. reverse 2 of the 4 stats on the cannons. With this system, fighters can take on fighters, while cruisers can slug it out large scale and they also have to add smaller guns on turrets and whatnot to take out fighters because the main guns aren't quick enough. It's not "bigger is better" it's "what purpose does this gun need to serve"
