Since they are called warp gates, jump drives should be called warp drives...
Just a small thing that has been bugging me ever since they came out.

or rename warp gates to jump gates (in fact that's what I thought they were called) besides "jump" implies instant transistion, while "warp" doesn't.

but we already have a /jump command, which moves you within a sector, so jump drive and jump gates would fit a lot better.

Matter of opinion. I think jump sounds better.

Warp reminds me of startrek. Jump reminds me of basically any other sci-fi.

I'm going to disagree with that. Warp is associated with most people with star trek, where not only is travel non-instantaneous, it occurs in realspace. Jump implies the travel is instantaneous, and is not associated with one franchise.

Lets call then transit drives/gates and then nobody will try applying their version of scifi to it :D only kidding of course.

The simple issue is naming different systems similarly can cause confusion. I appreciate the desire to name them based on their visual effect, but they may not always appear similar.

If anything, they should be called Jump Gates, but I think it's fine for now.

I'm 100% against renaming jump & warp to agree. I actually prefer that they have different names. I would actually be in favor of adding a third style of FTL travel called Hyper Drive.

In a game with INFINITE galaxies, it seems to imply that there is more than one way in which space-time might be folded or bypassed to achieve FTL travel. That has been my interpretation of them from the start - jumping is entirely different from warping in the same way an impulse drive is different from thrusters, an ion drive is different from a chemical rocket, etc. Doesn't this give us MORE room to play, over boxing everything into terms we've seen on TV?

Rather than force the entire technology to agree with one TV show or another, can't we just allow that there might be multiple practical modes of FTL travel?

Even in your favorite sci-fi media, do all the space-faring races use the same technology for weapons, power and engines?
