sorry if this has been suggested before or if there is some technical limitation for it that i am unaware of, but after many google searches, iv not found anything on it other than its not in the game.
basically, something like the astro technician but it will fully repair AND rebuild a ship and to its original blue print. the issue obviously is in the replacement of missing blocks due to damage and possible abuses of this mechanic. but i believe it would be an invaluable addition to the game. as alot of (or even all!) hard work can be instantly lost during a spontaneous pirate raid. so after giving it some thought, iv listed below all the problems such a system might encounter and possible solutions.
----
1: how does the game know which block to place where?
this could have a few different solutions. one could be maybe a new "damage state" too blocks, that when a block gets damaged enough instead of truly disappearing, it becomes invisible and uninteractable. essencially giving the illusion and functionality that half your ship is gone.
another of course is with the use of blueprints. so that to be able to repair your ship in this manner it needs to be associated with a blue print first. and the reconstruction beam would simply restore a ship to its originally associated blue print. the only seeming limitation to this method would be that once you associate a ship to a blue print any modifications after that wont be in the blueprint and thus wouldn't be restored. so to get around that maybe you could have an update blueprint button or something like that. so you can continue to modify a ship and repair it when needed.
this would also have the benefit of the game being able to tell the player "how damaged your ship is". as is when i take damage i dont really know how much of my ship is gone, until i go out and look (and cry). but if the games keeping track of all the missing blocks there could be say a damage percent indicator somewhere on the hud, that gives you what percentage of blocks are missing. so if you see 45.7% damage taken then you know almost half your ship is missing.

2: abuses and game balance.
this one actually isn't as bad as it sounds. with simple limits and restriction all possible abuses of such a system can be avoided.
replaced blocks should come from either the players inventory. or perhaps these kind of repairs can only be done at shops or specialized repair stations, and are not available to the player to make on his own. so you could say go to a shop and select "repair ship" and the cost of the repair would be the total price of all the replaced blocks at the current rate of the shop conducting the repair. this would also add incentive to find cheaper shops to get your ship repaired at. and maybe not all shop can conduct repairs.
**also one final thought while we are talking about balance, build mode should not be accessible during combat. iv seen many videos of people trying to conduct quick repairs on the fly while in combat. it feels very meta gamey and tends to ruin the experience for me. as i consider advanced build mode to be me watching things happen very fast. but in reality my little guy is going over there and placing all those blocks one by one, sparing me the tediousness of block by block construction. but this illusion breaks down when done during combat.**

well that was a bit longer than i thought it would be. but i guess it shows my enthusiasm for the idea. let me know what you guys think, or if theres some reason or limitation to the game that would prevent something like this.
