Rather than having a massivly power hungery impractical drive, or a warp gate that limits travel, have a warp drive that is small, with low poer requirements, say, a 1x3x3 engine stack. This drive would take 5 seconds to warm up, 5 seconds to travel, and when it arrives it will have no power, jsut like when you first get into a ship once the server starts. the drive can jump across entire systems, 16x16x16, with no side effects. The only limit is beacons, for the drive to be able to jump it requires a beacon in the sector that is powered, no blind jumps. The beacon will require massive amounts of power, but unlike warp gates there is no size limit, and a beacon cannot send you to another. If a beacon runs out of power it will have different effects based on when you are in the jump, if you are in the 5 second warmup it will cancel the warmup cold and yank half your power. Once you have jumped if ther is another beacon within a sector of your original target you will be directed there, if not it will drop you in a random sector between your jump point and the beacon. The beacon will have massive power requirements, the output of a 10x10x10 block of generators, and it will have to be on a station, planet or asteroid, no moving, for balance.

Or, specialized jump ships/pods. unarmed, unshielded, minimal engines, in the case of jump ships they will basicly be jump drives, massive powersource, and docking points where other ships would connect, once all ships are connected, it would jump to a destination and take the ships with them. In the case of pods larger shhips would have a special docking point where the pod would connect, then allow the ship to jump at the cost the pod will detach the instant it arrives, will need recharge, and will slow the ship considerably while it is attached

I was thinking near these lines as using whats already in the engine and coded would be easier for schema (probably)

So lets leverage the navigation as it is. You put in coords and the number of sectors to transit is displayed. You choose the number to skip, which directly relates to your fuel consumption, press accept and go.

For fuel lets use whats already in game - rocks, ores, water and organics. Each type would add so much to your transit fuel.

Now for physical blocks lets use a plex storage module for storage of fuel, if your fuel box gets hit you cant go anywhere till its replaced, as well as the fuel. Add a jump computer block and link it to whatever, maybe power blocks to power the jump, much like a shield.

Total jump length and efficiency can be altered according to whatever subjective critera are desierd as a baseline.
