I was having horrible sound issues (as in horrible to listen to - stuttering, endless wall-of-noise) after installing StarMade for the first time yesterday (yes, my son watches the YogsCast...)
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. Checking the OpenAL installer oalinst.exe in "C:\Program Files\OpenAL\" I found I had version 2.0.3.0. I have no idea where this installer came from, it must have been included in another game (I don't have a Creative Labs sound card).
This seems to be the most recent version available directly from Creative Labs containing the following DLLs, which are installed to "C:\Windows\system32\":
OpenAL32.dll version 6.14.357.22
wrap_oal.dll version 2.1.8.1
However, I found this message on the Creative Forums with a link to an updated OpenAL installer, version 2.1.0.0, purportedly from an official driver update. As the download (http://www.mediafire.com/?nwt3ilty2mo) is hosted on MediaFire I proceeded with caution and scanned for viruses and unpacked the contents to have a look. All seemed fine to me. When running the installer Windows confirmed Creative Labs Inc as the Verified Vendor.
The DLLs have been updated the following versions and after a reboot my sound problems appear to be fixed.
openal32.dll version 6.4.357.25
wrap_oal.dll 2.2.0.7
