It would be neat if some of the planets had a faction purpose to them.
A pirate world could be a platform for spawning lots of enemy ships. Like a pirate base, but much worse, and more rewarding should you conquer it.
A trading guild world could be like a super shop. A city complete with landing pads on the surface, and maybe a shipyard suspended above the surface in "orbit" for larger ships.
Perhaps these planets could have AI people on them, like the crew members, or those shop keepers.
