Why do I find so many ships parked at shops (not the undeathanator ones)? Do they offer any protection or are they just hoping to have your stray shots trigger the trading guild reaction?

Most likely, it's just players leaving their ships there because they just bought a new one or don't care to clean them up, however pirates are SUPPOSED to not attack near shops.
