Turrets spin left/right; but can also point up by 45 degrees. When they are pointing up (if they aren't "extremely recessed") the entire bottom is exposed.

For an example, imagine a turret on top a ship with an enemy sitting above the turret shooting down at it. Now imagine a second enemy coming from the side.

Of course there's also the aesthetics issue - I'm relatively selective when it comes looking at exposed bottoms. ;)
While that is true, you just have to design where your Turrets are suppose to be firing~
Using Mine as a Example, I have it set to benefit more form Broadside engagement, and as such I would turn it so it Lined up like so. Minimizes exposure of the underside :p

Though I do trim the edges of the turret with Hull, just to give it that Lip of detail.

Yeah I know that they can expose the bottom, I just don't find an exposed turret bottom all that bad, considering they can't aim up thaaaat far.

Well I just tried a dozen large, relatively heavily shielded turrets, and it ended in disaster.

I didn't even pit them against very strong ships yet they still got torn apart.

Too bad I can't just place the turret inside the ship's hull where enemies can't reach it.

Current game bug allows your missile turrets to self destruct and kill other turrets on your ship.
