After seeing the other thread of the same name I got to thinking 'Why are the trading guild the only people I can buy stuff off?' There appears to be no other NPC faction willing to sell you things, not even the pirates. Instead of telling me about the limited resources of the dev team why don't you guys come up with some interesting (hopefully sinister) story based explanations.

Hmm, maybe that will change when NPC life or civilizations on planets are introduced in the future.
I've mentioned before that it could be very interesting if those inhabited planets had specialized unique products made and availability would predominantly be at those locations. This would give an incentive for players to explore, find and go there and also for traders to make a profit from those unique items. I'm looking from mainly a single-player perspective though. ;)

After the devastating merchant war of of 31159 that lasted for a thousand years but didn't actually end until 32572, the sole remaining merchant family, described by some as a mob, decided that this level of devastation should not happen again, and downloaded the boss' consciousness to a self-repairing android before killing all living members to eliminate treachery, and ensure the continued survival of the last merchant faction.

After the total devastation of the merchant war of 31159, it took many generations (some say 10,000 years) for living beings to rediscover the technology to reach for the stars again. The last merchant family, renamed to the Trader Guild, has spread it's shops to every sector of space in the meantime, waiting for the day that they would once again enjoy commerce with customers....

    Or not.

I believe you can add NPC factions at least on a dedicated server with the remote admin tool under tools. at least i saw a bunch of NPC factions in the list including Pirates and Trade guys. Actually you can even switch them from what I see, make pirates the good guys. or at least on your side, and trade guys into the trade federation for the SW fans.

Hmm, some time ago someone posted the steps to create a NPC faction if you own the server or are in single-player mode.

    Create new NPC Factions
/faction_create_as -ID NAME (fake)Player - ID has to be negative!
    /faction_mod_relation -ID -1 enemy - It doesn´t like Pirates
/spawn_mobs BLUEPRINT -ID COUNT - Set number of ships in faction

(disclaimer: don't know if these commands are still available in the current build)

Although this can be fun, there isn't a way to for instance set up selling restrictions for the trading guild or a new NPC trader faction you create this way, so the idea that some items will only be available for sale from certain trading factions, what would make the whole buying and selling game much more interesting, isn't possible. Maybe later when there becomes a SDK or modding API available things like this could become an option. ;)

maybe a big asteroid that is hollow and pirates have set up a black market inside it and sell stolen ships (random future trading guild ships) that have random hulls replaced with mesh to look semi-repaired.

While many are under the impression that all shops are the same vendor, in actuality the Trading Guild is comprised of thousands, if not millions of independent vendors from many different backgrounds and financial capabilities. The Trading Guild is merely an organization that offers advertising, protection, and help resolving the logistical difficulties of ensuring safe trade routes in exchange for a small percentage of all goods sold, combined with a flat monthly fee to maintain the Trading Guild Fleet. You don't see non-Trading Guild shops very often because the Universe is cold and unforgiving to those that attempt to stand alone in it.

Thinking of starting up a shop of your own? Don't expose yourself to the litany of financial and physical risks that will almost magically vanish with Trading Guild membership. Don't panic, the Trading Guild is already sending emissaries your way to collect fees for your new full membership. We know you'll say yes, so we've taken the liberty of pre-approving your membership before you applied. After all, you do have a lot of really nice merchandise... it would be a shame if anything were to.... happen to it.

Representatives will contact you in person shortly to arrange a payment plan on the membership startup costs.

Long ago the world governments of earth where bankrupted by careful corporate maneuvering and well placed bribes. Eventually everything slowly came under the control of the trading guild that had formed from the most powerful corporations of the world. At first they simply led by proxy passing their demands on through puppet governments, thus staying blame free while leading the world into ruin. Once they had amassed enough control and capital, and where able to workout the science behind their plans, They began offering the people of the now grossly overpopulated earth a new opportunity space exploration, new worlds to settle and new hope for a dieing planet. Many jumped at the idea not realizing that in leaving their homes and joining this grand venture, they would be signing over control of their lives to the trading guild. The Earth itself already in its death throws as the worlds human population began its migration to the stars, became only a dead forgotten planet. But time heals all things and millennium to come may see it rise.

However, humans discovered they where indeed not alone. They also discovered they where not welcome, older races who had long ago discovered that life must find a balance, had been watching the humans for thousands of years. They saw humans as a virus consuming and spreading, first across their own world and now moving across the space between worlds. It was agreed on by the races who had watched these dangerous creatures evolve that should they ever breach the confines of their own world before they discovered their balance, they would have to be exterminated.

As humans and aliens began to come face to face it was inconceivable to humans how small colony ships could be seen as a threat to these unknown attackers, but hundreds of thousands of humans where slaughtered overnight, and in the days to come the aliens took no prisoners.

The human race was half decimated before the first prisoners of war where taken, and the trading guild was finally able to learn the true reasons for the war, the seemingly senseless murder of humans across the galaxy, and that their would be no hope of peace. These aliens saw humans as a deadly virus that consumed animal, plant, and even the earth beneath their feet until nothing is left. They had no interest and no intent in negotiations with humans, anymore than humans would have negotiated with Ebola, they would wipe out the human race to the last, and they would not stop until it was done.

Faced with the answers the gained from their captives, hundreds of different races form thousands of worlds throughout the galaxy. The trade guild realized there would be no hope for peace, but it also gave them an idea, they would do what any good virus does, adapt. They poured all their research into the creation of a system that could track and preserve a human conscious and restore them after death, and so the Undeathinator was born.

However, the truth was buried and the Trade guild painted the picture that these aliens who simply wanted to defend their homes from what the believed to be a deadly threat where labeled pirates and nothing more. And so the war continues though humans have the advantage of virtual immortality, the alien pirates persist and as rumor of the human threat spread across the galaxy and beyond more and more aliens of different races and wolds from near and far even as far as other galaxies began to descend on the humans. Still to the day these "pirates" attack on sight, without mercy, without remorse, with no hope of peace.

Meanwhile, the buried truth gave rise to new problems new factions began to rise and move away from the trade guild. The trade guild no longer held absolute power in the galaxy though they did have soul possession of the truth, and with the "pirates" now prepared to die to the last rather than be captured. It is unlikely the rest of humanity will ever know. Though some have begun to ask who are these pirates, what do they want. If answers are to be found it must be determined who to ask.
