It would be interesting if the skybox would tint all objects within the system to whatever color the skybox is.

That would be more real than reality *pun intended*

    Maybe.

This sounds like something which the game's current lighting engine couldn't handle well, given that dynamic/cross-entity lighting is not possible. I suppose you could just put a transparent layer over the whole game window (below the UI), but to be quite frank I think that colour-shifting, especially like that, could be pretty unappealing.

Players tend to design their ships with colour in mind, especially in terms of lighting. Messing with the colour balances people have chosen seems like it would be a pain, and for no particular gain in terms of the aesthetics of the game.

The skybox is a back-ground layer. It is painted on the inside of a cube which is shown behind everything else - you are always in the centre of it and only your orientation in it changes. It already is done.
It doesn't need to regenerate each frame, only display an image like in an image-viewer /Paint /Powerpoint /Firefox.

With high-resolution sky-boxes, your ram-usage will grow. Expect lags by the size of cached images on weaker-end hardware (lower than 2 GB ram for StarMade exclusively).
-> Sky-box lightening is no issue in interior spaces, as long as lightening is only applied to outside blocks.

Inside-outside can be distinguished by a layer of "vacuum blocks" which fall like fabric over an object, but to make it accurate, it needs fall on the ship from 6 directions and from there to the inside (inside as in concave/convex-graph theories).
-> It can be done after leaving a shipyard only, making it relatively cheap but then it doesn't relate to combat damage.
