This idea sounds like a Player Council 2.0 but this time the selection is hand-selected between old forum users.
Not really, the council and the community mentors have very different roles. One is a bridge between the devs and community, the other is there to denote players that have helped/help the community.

By the way, Keptick should totally be a mentor as well. He's very knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of building, and pretty awesome in general. \o/

Please be aware that we are testing this as we implement it, changes can and probably will be made as we discuss this on an ongoing basis and see it in practice.
To be honest this doesn't comfort me at all, it's just what I would expect from introducing experimental roles. It also completely dodges the question. Is there any chance either you or Crusade could please address it?

UndeadPotato It doesn't have to comfort you. It won't affect you in any form unless you become troublesome in chat or post inappropriate content to community content. The moderation abilities that mentors have are EXTREMELY limited, primarily for chat and community content.

You're displaying concern for a role that should not be causing any concern - Posts cannot be permanently deleted, only hidden and unhidden, mentors cannot ban members from chat, and they can only unapprove content - not delete, from community content, and mentors need to be influential and have good standing in regards to their warning point history that is acceptible (seriously, most old players have a warning point history)

therimmer96 joked that his history would prevent him from getting this role. It does stop him from getting this role (there are other reasons too) but that is the primary one.

Stop trying to prevent outstanding community members from getting the recognition they deserve, and maybe nominate one or two.

    TL;DL
There is no need for concern, stop worrying about new roles that have minimal impact on forum interaction.

10/10, nice way of glorifying the role of mini-mod. Still doesnt address the mod problem itself, but its something.

Let's address this in multiple parts.

"Stop trying to prevent outstanding community members from getting the recognition they deserve, and maybe nominate one or two."
This would be a reasonable thing if I didn't say something like
I agree with the idea of celebrating outstanding community members, and the people who already have the role definitely deserve it,
    or
To anyone with the Mentor position, I hope I didn't bother you with this. I'm glad you've stuck around to be models toward other players. I just don't think the position also warrants moderator powers, and want to have them use different criterea for who gets the roles.
I have explicitly said that I support outstanding community members getting the recognition they deserve. Don't try and skip past that, the evidence is in my first post in this thread. I haven't nominated people yet because you have yet to explain to us the full thought process for this position. If all it was about was recognition of community members, then wouldn't the title and cool name color be enough?

"It doesn't have to comfort me." Super neato, I was just pointing out that expecting admins to keep an eye on their experiments isn't supposed to be that significant of a thing. It's the baseline of being responsible, which you have stated that you are, and I genuinely think that you will be.

"It won't affect you in any form unless you become troublesome in chat or post inappropriate content to community content. The moderation abilities that mentors have are EXTREMELY limited, primarily for chat and community content." Yes, ideally it won't affect me in any form unless I become troublesome. I do hope that will always be the case. What if it doesn't though in the future? We'll have to wait for someone in one of two timezones to catch it in time. Once again, it likely won't do so, but as I've already said, your background check into the behavior of nominees literally qualifies every single new account onto SMD.

"Posts cannot be permanently deleted, only hidden and unhidden, mentors cannot ban members from chat, and they can only unapprove content - not delete, from community content, and mentors need to be influential and have good standing in regards to their warning point history that is acceptible (seriously, most old players have a warning point history)" Thank you for telling us for all of the capabilities that weren't in the original post. For whatever reason that they were left out, it's good for us to all know them now.

"You're displaying concern for a role that should not be causing any concern" I will admit that my initial reaction was different to what I'm trying to talk about now. That was mostly because you dropped it on us days before letting us know that it was a thing that was even going to happen. I've said I'm okay with the current people (I think it's only 3 at the moment?) having these powers. They're probably not going to do anything bad with them. All I'm asking is why the recognition that these people receive also provides mod powers. That's it. Do we not deserve to know?

i feel like I should nominate myself for a mentor role for reasons.

    Reasons:
Aesthetic building advice in the SMD chat, especially regarding pipes and greeble details and various tips and tricks with interior detailing.
Semi-often hanging out in various starmade streamers streams and I have given advice on ship building that has apparently helped.
My thread on power regen entitled "A small guide to power" which covers the basics of how to get power reactors to get more regen in a set amount of space, this has helped at least 2 people. (I know one personally who used it as a reference while building a ship, she made me proud).
The BRIDGE is regarded by several to be a very good example of detailing and how to make grey look good (top tip, detail with dark grey too and mix in some colour here and there as a spot colour to make things interesting in the details without distracting from the overall grey)
I have some knowledge with logic that is mainly related to advanced airlocks and dancefloors.

    Yet more reasons:
I enjoy seeing how other builders improve over time as this also helps me give advice to people who are requiring a bit of advice to head them in the right direction of improving their own skills as a builder, be it systems or aesthetics on a ship. (I do not look at your baby photos)
I have worked in many build styles and helped players build ships in their own build styles, because of this I am willing to try and improve any ship that someone wants improved aesthetically.

    Reasons more yet:

Melted my laptop testing the limits of how many ships could be in one sector (80000 by the way, it will also crash the operating system of a laptop causing the fan to stop working and the CPU to build up a lot of heat that ends up melting the cheap plastic under the keyboard resulting in the loss of the F1 key)
Research into how spaced armour effects the defence of a ship after its shields go down, only useful at stopping a few missile hits.
Wrote a piece of music for the blood and steel PVP tournament that will be used at some point (tm)
Did some testing regarding the LoD system, 18k pipes has no more of an effect on FPS than 18k blocks from a distance.
    Slowly learning to spell.

Of course people might be more qualified for this role than I am, I cannot remember names at this moment in time so I cannot personally recommend anyone.

UndeadPotato Yes i should of defined the role more more clearly in the original post, as well as permissions and 'powers' they have. That's my mistake, I'll be more mindful in the future.

Can we expect a little more elaboration on it in the next few days when you have time?

UndeadPotato Sure thing. There is a new subforum under starmade community that outlines current active mods and mentors - and what the mentors specialise in.

There will be a post in this subforum outlining the mentor role in greater detail as well as methods the community can use to nominate members.
