As well know it's planned in a huge work in progress, there's a variety of features I've thought about that may be necessary for this coming update. Correct me if some of these are already planned.

An automated system that could replaced destroyed or missing blocks:

A key feature that may or may not be already in the works. Aside from being able to restore a ship or entity's HP and armor systems, why not have an option to re-add all missing blocks that were presumably lost in battle? Basically, it would restore it based on the blueprint the ship is from before a possible accident or confrontation that'd lead it to getting damaged.

This feature could be placed into the current Astro-Tech beams as an add on. Imagine having an entity running up and down a single rail with the AT beams constantly firing at the damaged ship it's aimed it, (assuming you know how to set up the logic systems needed) Not only would it repair damaged blocks, but replace missing ones as well.

    Recycle/scrapping:

In the event your ship has outlived its usefulness or is no longer wanted, or if you're too lazy to dismantle it in Build mode, you could have the shipyard automatically take apart the vessel and hand over each block or place it into selected storage blocks. This would be beneficial to anyone who happens to have factories on their shipyard stations if the controller block could be linked to them using C and V.

Allowing shipyard features to be applied to ships: (Optional)

Though being able to piece together another ship ON a ship might be a bit much to ask for, why not enable all features including Scrapping and Repairing on mobile entities? Let's say you've got one massive vessel with lots of interior or exterior space available, you could basically have a Battle Barge. Assuming the docked ships can fit, whoever is piloting the parent craft could repair, replace missing blocks, or scrap the selected ship using a rail based entity that would run along it. (Of course the player has to assemble everything and configure all logic systems for it)

    Opinions?

having ship yards on a large ship or barge could mean having a ship that can pop out newly printed drones as fast as it can make them.

That could be an issue as the game stands now, as there is infinite cargo. But with finite space, I imagine that would not be so much of an issue, as it would either have to be dedicated totaly to cargo building, in which case it would be vunerable, or absolutely gigantic, in which case it might be better just to make a more standard warship.

An automated system that could replaced destroyed or missing blocks:
Schine Team members has mentioned in some occassions, that repairing is a planned function for Shipyards. In theory this function is even more important, than building a ship itself.
In the event your ship has outlived its usefulness or is no longer wanted, or if you're too lazy to dismantle it in Build mode, you could have the shipyard automatically take apart the vessel and hand over each block or place it into selected storage blocks. I agree. It is highly probable that the function is already considered, though no official clues were given.

Totally disagree. Diminishing the role of stations and promoting gigantism even more is not something I'd stand for.
