Take the Pirate AI, rename it 'Harbingers of the Purge', give it access to a select set of ships, and change it's relations to be hostile to Pirates but no one else. What have you got? Nothing new. But do that 5 more times and what might you get? 7 factions with different flag ships and different relations, a plethora of possible battles, and waves made of stylized (and faction recognizable) ships instead of a random assortment of your old builds.
The game already has a way to limit which blueprints are available for AI factions and how those factions view other factions. It also has a way of handling player-made factions and their relations with each other which triggers (or not) defense turrets. It seems like it would be only a slight step to be able to 'clone' the pirate faction, rename it, and give it access to a unique set of ships. Instead of being limited to Trader/Pirate/Player we could have Trader/Pirate/Player/Borg/Harbinger/Space Marines/Necroforge/etc.
