It's clear that the Starmade devs don't want to create a Minecraft-like experience, which is great! Starmade is its own unique game as it should be. That doesn't mean that some of us wouldn't enjoy dragging some aspects of Minecraft into Starmade's more versatile engine. This is a thread for discussing mod ideas that would make the game more focused on astronaut gameplay, making the experience approach the feel of heavily-modded Minecraft.

    This assumes two things:
    1. Schema and co. will come up with planets that are large enough and developed well enough to spend a lot of time on.
    2. Schema and co. will eventually implement a good and flexible modding API.

People would love to be able to craft their own energy weapons.

It's tempting to go the pure "Minecraft" route, and simply set up some simple recipes for pre-made weapons, but I have repeatedly seen the desire for truly custom voxel weaponry.

So in place of the standard "Place three diamonds in a row to make the best sword", the Starmade item crafting system should involve laying out different blocks on some sort of massive "work table" of a limited size (say, 32x32 blocks in surface area), and have the game create an astronaut-scale voxel "tool" that follows the function of the blocks laid out.

This sort of expansion on the crafting idea would lead to an infinite number of possible tools. Vampire beams that hurt targets and heal the user, full medkits that heal massive amounts of health, shield projector pods, laser guns, rocket launchers, and all kinds of multi-function devices. For this to work well, medical blocks should take some energy, and you should have to build power generation into your table recipies.

I suggest a system like the weapons research in a little game called Navalia were you "research" new weapons which really consists sliding (sliders would consist of options like rate of fire, damage, range, clip size (if that's a thing) a few sliders around depending on the quality you want from the weapons (you can put the sliders all the way up but it would make it extremely expensive and use many rare materials) there would be a few weapon "models" which essential says it fires this projectile. If we were to do it like this then we should also add a few options like check boxes which add certain qualities to a weapon, and example being a beam weapons with the option to turn it into a pulse beam or a heal beam or a power supply beam or the laser being able to be turned into a shotgun, sniper rifle, or an assault rifle.

It would also be nice to drop the research points and go for it just taking time to research.

I see this as the best option since its not very complicated which would help new players and not become too annoying later in the game.

(go to 10:00 for a quick look at the research system)

Really, what is the point of guns in Starmade when you can devastate someone with a huge ship
Really, what is the point of guns today when you can just devastate someone with a tank

Really, whats the point of a missile when you can remove someone from existance with a multiple warhead nuclear icbm (most icbms carry 10 independently targeted warheads + decoy warheads, they would carry more but a peice of paper some people signed says only ten)

I believe what you're looking for is Skywanderers.

Starmade at this point is always doomed to have ship mode vs. pilot mode, and continue plowing down a very different road. Planets will never work as well as they did with the "cookie" model, and we've been begging Schine to support mods for 3-4 years now.
