We are eventually going to control fleets and such so what I suggest is an in game mecenary faction you hire to complete tasks for you. Such as guarding your outpost or protecting a cargo transport through pirate territory. Once the job is done, they will no longer be in your employ and go on about their way.
You can hire anything from a single mercenary who happens to be better with turrets than your turret guy, to a couple of fighter pilots to beef up your squadron for the next mission.
Hire merc commandos to help the boarding parties, or an armored cruiser to soak up some dps while you siege a station.
Best part is there will be another community contest to determine the ships they use.
