When humanity first spread out into the rest of the milky way, we hoped to find a better future for ourselves. To collect more resources, learn about the Universe around us and perhaps find peace.
We hoped.
But our perspective of the universe at large was shattered when we came across star systems that seemed to defy what we knew already. Stars that were only a few kilometres across, planets that were effectively plains. The numbers quite simply couldn\'t add up, it was all physically impossible by the millennia of research and observation. But what changed things the most was the mineral plextanium.
The mysterious Dr Plex, as they\'re known today, was one of the first pioneers into the \'anomalous region\' as what we call home now. There he discovered that mineral and began to develop it into what is now the keystone of modern technology. Our advances in technology allowed us to travel through the galaxy at incredible speeds, produce almost anything from just a handful of objects. The Schemadyne corporation rose and made hundreds of developments in this period, becoming the single most valuable entity in the history of humanity.
There was no need to fight for resources anymore. Gradually, conflict was more just heated debates than what we would normally expect. But technology cannot outpace society if the latter is to stay.
In the anomalous region, or new-cos as it was often called then, there was no real law beyond the United Extrasolar Law Enforcement, which had only a few small holdings. New-cos became the like the Wild West, with pirates terrorising small outposts and growing more and more confident in their strength. It was agreed that a new age of warfare would be funded and developed by Schemadyne, and they delivered.
The battle of Janus was where the Modular Adapting High-Velocity Particle Destabilisation Cannon was first used. The cannon had been produced on a small scale, with only one ship having it in the UELE fleet there: the Star-Made. That ship alone took out two-thirds of all the pirates in charted new-cos. The system was gradually improved until it became the AMC we know today. The Self-Replenishing Energy Warhead Producer was the next step, able to tear through any material as if it was just a thin vapour.
After one pirate encounter, the Star-Made\'s captain, Admiral Rayleigh was faced with having his ship out of commission for quite some time. Furious, he publicly demanded Schemadyne to begin the production of the modern shielding system we know and love today.
The Great Interplanetary War began not long afterwards. Every nation on Earth raced to get these weapons in order to create great empires. Continents banded together in a bid to ensure they could thin the pool of the opposition. The cost was catastrophic. It was said at one point that World War 4 would be fought with rocks and sticks, but it almost seemed as if there would be no World War 4. People fled in droves to new-cos, hoping to find some peace. The Star-Made was instrumental in protecting the refugees, but met its end before too long. The ship was simply outdated, nowhere near the level of the battleships from the failed empires. The ship fought to the very last, and her profile is regarded as the unofficial symbol of all new-cos.
In this war, Earth as we know it was utterly destroyed. What is left of the solar system is mainly dust, wreckages, asteroid fields and screams. The volume of distress signals emanating from there is enough to overwhelm most communications briefly. Perhaps there is still a war being fought there. Maybe it\'s all just ghosts.
In the wake of the Great Planetary War, people rushed to organisations as protection. The Trading Guild was first, seeking to supply anyone with what they needed at an affordable price.
Dozens more factions exist today, ranging from powerful astronaval forces that can destroy a planet in the space of a few minutes to mercenary groups to miners to engineers. With more and more items supposedly being sold and developed by SchemaDyne and Dr Plex coming to the field, humanity is still advancing, but never shall we be as great as we once where. Despite our fancy titan ships or wondrous stations, there will be the hole in our hearts of there being no place to realy call home.
And that, my friends, is how the StarMade universe came to be.
