Well if the devs are trying to avoid items and blocks manifesting out of the void or trying to come up with good enough lore and phenomena excuses for them appearing out of thin air this might be an interesting topic to read. Also some things about how AIs control their factioned things.

First up on AI Controlled ships without an AI Module an NPC could be ejected from the Core that could be killed to gain loot from. The NPC's Inventory may or may not have items in it and are normally things meant for repairing the existing structure it spawned with. Also when an NPC Crew gets out of the core of a ship or turret if there is no faction block or AI module the ship returns to inactive status just like if a player gets out of the core the ship would become neutral.

Now in the case of Ships and Turrets with AI Modules and a Faction Block the faction block like normal would hold the faction information. As long as the NPC remains in the core like with a player it has a temp sig of the faction on the entity in question. Throw in a Faction Block and even if the NPC gets out it retains the Faction Sig like with a player.

Storages, Factories, Refineries, Assemblers, or any inventories of a creature mob and other entity in general would also act as a spawn location for for various loot and items. In the case of factories, refineries, and assemblers you'd find what you'd expect in them based on what they were, might even find out a factory has an item selected to be made in production as well. Again it'd only make the item if the resources were able to be drawn to the factory just like normal so hidden storages could supply the needed resources until they ran out. In most cases an inventory of a mob be it a Creature, Ship, Turret, Station, etc could act as a place for items to turn up in when the entity spawns.

Here's a fun way to use various natural phenomena to the advantage of the devs to make things like Planets, Asteroids, and even stars respawn if totally mined out or destroyed.

There is a long list of things that could be used to respawn asteroids and even planets when the players aren't looking or not in the affected area. Even if they are in the area while it is happening it could be very unhealthy to be in said area while the event is going on but very rewarding if you live through it. :P

In the case of respawning things like asteroids they are totally regenerated since their older versions that were there were destroyed by salvaging or some other means.

    • Mass Flares: Chunks of the Sun's mass break off and are sent flying randomly throughout the system, these both cause damage to ships and stations and also may or may not respawn asteroids in unloaded sectors.
    • Mini Nova: Happens unexpectedly but the first sign of it is the sun changing color rapidly and randomly. This is your cue to run like a chicken on fire out of the area unless you are bunkered down in a station that can take the hit. The whole system in shifted around, planets destroyed and respawned in other area, all asteroids in the system are respawned. Existing things that survived the blast are repositioned to other areas in the system so some planets, asteroids, and stations that were in the old version of the system might survive into the new one. For a station or ship to live through this it'd have to have several layers of armor and a lot of shielding, the more the better. Too little and it gets vaporized with everything on it. :P Also this event can change the star in the system into another one in some cases.
    • Jump Anomalies: These happen when too many jumps happen passing along a path. Basically they can cause damage to ships jumping through them to another destination but also might cause asteroids from systems to be carried along as well to the jump location at high speeds. Also can cause new ones to be spawned along the jump path as well.
    • BlackHole Formation & Destruction: Sometimes the blackholes will vanish and form again in a new system within a galaxy and a new system is formed where they use to be while the one in the system they ended up is destroyed or mostly destroyed when this happens. Like with Mass Flares and the Mini Novas stations and other objects can survive the event but in this case it is unlikely but it can happen. A stray faction's home base like in the other cases is the most likely thing to come out unaffected and as was with the Mini Nova it might not be in the same place it use to be.
    • Nebula Space: Nebulas would happen over many systems and there are a few topics floating around with ideas already as to what would happen. In this case they can cause new systems to form or be reformed and apply any number of other existing effects on things within them, Stations and ships might find themselves in different locations than they were out of the blue, new planets and stars could form creating totally new systems even in void systems.
    • Wandering Bodies: Cases of Stars, Planets, Asteroids and other entities like them wandering the universe affected by the gravity fields of systems these would tend to hang out on the borders of systems but have no particular system they are bound to and just drift from one place to the next. They can cause the formation of new asteroids and planets. Sometimes when a wandering star crashes into an existing one it'd cause the star to change causing a larger version of the Mini Nova event fully changing most of the system around and respawning planets and asteroids in the process.

So this list could go on but what else can be added to it I guess can be decided by anyone. :P Hope this breaks the dev's case of programmer's block. :) :D
