Currently Jump Drives are boring just like it was without them. Well, thanks god You don't need anymore to constantyl hold "W" but instead You need to: charge FTL, Jump, Charge FTL, Jump... etc.

It's only a little bit less boring than holding "W".
Jayman38 posted idea in one of threads to make hyperspace more like Minecraft Nether.

Hyperspace would be separated world. But distances in it are 8x shorter than in normal world.
So if You will fly 1000 blocks in "X" direction then after You will jump out You will spawn 8000 blocks away.

Hyperspace wouldn't need to be empyty. Schema could fill it with some interesting stuff :P

I like the actual jump drives, but I see hyperspace could solve some problems.
If you need shields to survive in it and it would apply continuous damage to the shield, a big ship (with more shields) could travel a longer distance. (I think in most films/books/stories small ships can't travel long distances)
Also it would prevent ship to jump out of the fight after their shield drops. They could fly a little away, but not 8 sectors :)

Then just fill the hyperspace with anomalies and some fancy stuff and it's perfect.

Nah, different dimentions almost certainly require loading screens and skooma really doesn't want them.

Don't be so quick to dismiss it. It would use much of the stuff that is already loaded, so we could minimize the loading to nothing or near nothing. I imagine things in normal space could be represented by map-icons in hyperspace, so you could effectively see where you are going, and how close you are to something. (E.g. A star, a planet, a station, another ship, etc.) Hyperspace background could simply be yet another low-res texture. Positively everything except the background (if that's even needed? could be a simple shader overlay instead) is already there. The whole point was to reuse what is already there in a new way for a new travel method that wouldn't break the speed barrier.

I'd prefer something more like Star Wars where you enter hyperspace to a given destination, but while in transit you cannot really interact with the universe. So Hyperspace isn't really a realm you play in, it's more of a fancy loading screen while you approach the destination and the server prepares the area.

But I still want you to fly along a course so Interdictor cruisers can pull you out of hyperspace prematurely :p

We already sort of have a loading screen when using a jump drive. You teleport, and the loading is (theoretically) masked by a flashy warp tunnel effect. Entering hyperspace would be the same way.
