    I understand that you start with a jump gate computer, but how do you place it? It won't let me attach it to a ship core. Is it a stand-alone unit like a ship core, or do I need to buy a space station core?

    I believe @Raiben made a video tutorial on youtube. (EFSF Raiben) You may want to check there. I'm at work so I cant link directly I'm afraid.

    I get you build the outline of the shape you want the gate way to be, but it wont work, i made a basic square outline with the gate computer in the middle on the top. I could be missing something obvious but cant see it.

    It's hard to say. I've seen videos on youtube, but only people using them, there's nothing I've seen on any construction of one. The shop only says how to set one up and to build a basic square outline (how i have done in the spoiler). Yet it doesn't seem to say anything other than to make it a 2D loop.

    If I'm reading you right, your loop looks like this:

    Code:
    MMMCMMM
    M     M
    M     M
    MMMMMMM
    Legend:
    M = Gate Module
    C = Gate Computer

    If that's correct, the Computer is interrupting the loop. Take it out of the loop and place it elsewhere.

    Code:
    MMMCMMM
    M     M
    M     M
    MMMMMMM
    Legend:
    M = Gate Module
    C = Gate Computer
    That is correct, but it states that the gate 'C' has to be touching 2 of the modules 'M'
    "That means, each block that is connected to the gate computer (place that one first) must exactly touch two other gate blocks."

    Unless you have it like this
    -----MCM
    MMMMMMM
    M------------M
    M------------M
    MMMMMMM

    (EDIT- That doesn't work either)[DOUBLEPOST=1410496251,1410493050][/DOUBLEPOST]I'm pretty sure someone can come here and tell us, or make a video how to. Come on big youtubers, show your subs how to make one.
